We also did the house parties with games. There would be apple dooking and blindfolded doughnut off a string between doorway eating. I still do these now but there is usually a drinking game attached. I always loved all the supernatural stuff too, I tend to think of it more as the things our brains can convince us of combined with unknown as yet science and some other weird stuff than full on straight forward 'evils'. I think its always a good event for kids anyway as they're back at school and Christmas/winter holidays are ages away. A bit of a scare is fun for everyone. I've enjoyed a few halloweens just at home with rare steaks, red wine, candles and old horror movies. BUT I do love a costume party if there is one going. Some years I've been to about 3 and others there have been none. This year there are so far two which my husband has been invited to (and by extension, me!) so now comes the time to think of costumes - but do we go creepy, cool or colossal?
The last time I went out for Halloween in 2011 I went as Rosie the Rivetor. Complete with my miniature Rosie action figure! Dead easy costume to do. I wore jeans and my Doc Martins, bought a demin shirt from Matalan (which I still wear a lot actually) and bought a small cut of red and white dotty material from Remnant Kings for the headscarf. My friend Kitsch Kat went as Ugly Betty that year. We were an odd match but y'know - American underdog heroes!
This costume I had to hand sew too because I didn't have a sewing machine. I made the whole thing - I'm quite proud of how it turned out! The wig is from a costume shop. I was working in a bar back then and we were a bit of a mishmash of costumes.
I think I lost this costume in the move but this year for the first time in AGES me and the husband will be going to something TOGETHER! THIS MEANS WE CAN COUPLE COSTUME!!!!! We've never actually done this before. Previously we've been out together at the same party as Wonder Woman & a cowboy and as Barbarella and a cowboy. One year we were Debbie Harry and Wayne from Waynes World. I was in much better shape during this period...
